King Sturge on Chris Evans Show and Many Nationals

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

My press release on the sale of the Wembley turf (see previous post) has won phenomenol coverage for my client King Sturge.

King Sturge partner Mike Hanson - who was quoted in the release - was invited to be a guest on BBC Radio 2’s Chris Evans Show yesterday evening and he also did Nick Ferrari’s Breakfast show on LBC.

Today the story has made page leads in The Sun and the Daily Star and has also been featured in the Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph. Collectively the coverage represents well over £100,000 worth of publicity. Proof that you can’t beat a good story, well told, to raise your profile and build your reputation.

The beauty of this story is that today’s coverage is just the start - King Sturge can expect more great coverage when the auction to sell the turf closes at the end of the month. There has been some wild speculation about the value of the turf with the Star claiming it’ll sell for a million. I very much doubt the closing price will be that high but we shall have to wait and see.

For Sale: A Piece of English Sporting History

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Football fans have the chance to buy a piece of English sporting history when the goal line from the 1966 World Cup final is auctioned by King Sturge later this month.

The Wembley Stadium goal line has been the subject of discussions and debates for decades thanks to England hero Geoff Hurst’s controversial second goal.

As every football fan knows, Hurst’s shot hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced on the line. The German players claimed the ball didn’t actually cross the line but the Swiss ref, Gottfried Dienst, and the Russian linesman Tofik Bakhramov, said “Goal” so it stood.

The famous goal line was dug up when Wembley was re-turfed in 1969 and a TV producer called Bob Gardam took it home. He planted it in his back garden in Hertfordshire where it has remained ever since.

Now though the new owner of the house has decided to donate part of the goal line to the National Football Museum in Preston where it will be displayed for the nation to enjoy.

The donation will be made at the annual Football Hall of Fame Awards at the Millennium Mayfair Hotel on 18 September when the goal line will be reunited with the match ball, for the first time since 1966, in front of a celebrity audience.

The remaining section of the goal line is to be divided into seven different lots each one yard long. These will be auctioned off by King Sturge at an online auction opening on 8 September and closing on 29 September 25% of the auction proceeds to benefit UNICEF UK, in conjunction with Soccer Aid

The IOG (Institute of Groundsmen) have verified that the Wembley turf was not replaced between 1966 and 1969 and the STRI (Sports Turf Research Institute) confirmed the authenticity of the goal line through scientific soil analysis.

The famous goal line fell into the hands of Bob Gardam after the pitch was used for the Horse of the Year Show in 1969. The badly damaged pitch was used for one last match – a fun game between World of Sport staff from London Weekend television and their rivals from ITN.

Mr Gardam was the director of LWT’s Big Match programme and part of their team that day. At the end of the game Wembley’s groundsman George Stanton asked Mr Gardam if he would like a piece of the soon to be replaced turf as a souvenir.

Mr Gardam said: “I was so knackered that I couldn’t be bothered. Then it suddenly occurred to me that the north end goal was where Geoff Hurst had fired in that terrific shot. ‘Hold on,’ I said. I went and got my car, drove it up through the tunnel and out onto the pitch, where some chaps kindly dug out the entire goal line, a foot either side.

“We rolled it up into three strips which we put into the car boot. Back home, I laid them into my lawn in the shape of a V for Victory sign.”

The piece of goal line donated to the National Football Museum will become part of a permanent exhibit with the match ball from the 1966 final. The exhibit will tour the country and may to play a part in the opening ceremony of the London Olympics in 2012.

Mike Hanson, Partner at King Sturge, said: “We are delighted to be handling the sale of a piece of the nation’s sporting history.

“This is a unique disposal and something which is difficult to value because it has never been sold before. We are particularly pleased that a section of the goal line will be placed on display in the National Football Museum for the public to enjoy and the sale of the remaining lots will benefit such a great cause as Soccer Aid which is raising funds for UNICEF..”

Funds raised by Soccer Aid 2008 will go towards the main areas of UNICEF’s work - health, education, nutrition, water, HIV and AIDS and protection for vulnerable children.

Funds raised by Soccer Aid will be spent on:

Helping to reduce child mortality in Sierra Leone
Improving care for children with disabilities in Georgia
Protecting children living on the streets in the Philippines
Providing safe water in Nepal
Building ‘safe parks’ for vulnerable children in South Africa
Supporting children affected by conflict in Democratic Republic of Congo

UNICEF helps children to survive and thrive in more than 190 countries worldwide. We work with partners to provide emergency support and long-term development solutions. UNICEF is funded entirely by voluntary contributions.

UNICEF works through local staff in the field and by supporting many carefully selected partner organisations.

Washout Summer Boosts Overseas Weddings

Monday, September 8th, 2008
Scores of loved-up British couples are turning their backs on the miserable UK summer and heading to sunnier climes to celebrate their weddings.

Many celebrities, such as footballer Wayne Rooney and his wife Colleen, opt to hold their weddings overseas and more of us than ever are choosing to follow suit.

The last three months have seen precious few bright sunny days in the UK with much of the summer being cloudy and showery.

The weather has had an effect on the wedding industry with many couples choosing to head to where the sun is pretty much guaranteed.

Spain is the number one destination for Brits wanting to tie the knot abroad with other Spanish speaking countries such as Mexico and the Dominican Republic also very popular.

The move has meant a boom in business for Bingham based language company betterlanguages.com.

The company translate official documents, such as wedding certificates, into English – essential for the marriages to be officially recognised back home in the UK.

CEO Mike Hunter said that his company was currently receiving ten requests every week from British couples who had married overseas.

He said: “Last year we were getting about two such inquiries a week but this year it’s around five times that. Some have said they just didn’t want to risk getting married here in Britain because the summer has been so unpredictable this year.

“It made more sense for them to head somewhere they were assured some sunshine. I suppose it is their big day and they just don’t want to take any chances.

“It may seem a bit extreme to some people but many couples go to all kinds of lengths to ensure their weddings are perfect.”

The British couples were following in the footsteps of celebrities such as Wayne Rooney and wife Colleen who got spliced in Portofino, Italy in June. Ironically their big day was marred by heavy rain.

Mr Hunter added: “We do get the odd Italian one but the vast majority are from Spain, the Dominican Republic and Mexico.

“We use translators from each country to ensure an absolutely accurate translation. Even though all of these countries are Spanish speaking nations each has its own dialects which can subtly effect meaning.”

He added that the couples often didn’t realise they would need their certificates translating until after their weddings and many found his company through the internet when they returned from their honeymoons.

He said: “It is important to have properly translated certificates particularly if the wife wants to change her name on documents such as her passport and driving licence and on bank and mortgage accounts.”

A Walking Billboard

Friday, September 5th, 2008

Westlife fan Vicky Jones from Abercwmboi in Wales has celebrated her 40th birthday by having a tattoo of the aging boy band across her back.
Clearly she is a mad woman who has imposed her inexplicable love of the Irish crooners on her nearest and dearest. The position of the tattoo on her back means Vicky, who describes herself as “Westlife’s biggest fan” won’t have to look at the artwork but her family will have to face it everyday.
It is Vicky’s husband Colin I feel sorry for. This poor bloke will wake up every morning for the rest of his life to see Westlife staring at him from his wife’s shoulders. And he doesn’t even like the band.
Vicky said: “He can’t abide Westlife but he doesn’t say a lot.”
I’m guessing he has problems getting a word in over the constant noise coming from the CD player.
Vicky has become a walking billboard for Westlife. A living breathing sandwich board. I’m not sure it’s the type of PR the boyband would welcome however. It sends out the message, “Westlife fans are sad, middle aged idiots.”

Life’s A Piece Of Cake For Tanya

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

THE sweet taste of success in business has proven to be a piece of cake for one Nottingham woman.
Tanya Boothe swapped the boardroom for the baking tray in March when she quit Experian after 17 years to launch cupcake specialist Bluebell Bakery.
Now Tanya spends her days baking and decorating her cupcakes in the kitchen of her home in Colwick.
She prides herself on sourcing only the best locally-produced ingredients for her cakes and flatly refuses to use additives or preservatives.
Her new life is a far cry from her high-powered role travelling the world as part of Experian’s acquisitions team.

Tanya was responsible for managing takeover projects worldwide for the Nottingham giant and her duties took her as far as Beijing.
Now she sells her delicious cakes through her website www.bluebellbakery.co.uk and offers free delivery on all orders.
Her cupcakes have quickly proven to be a big hit with corporate clients including her former employers, Experian, and Trent FM. She is also busy with weddings and private parties.
Tanya said it was while on holiday with her mum, Janis, that the inspiration came to change her life and launch her business.
She said: “Every year for the past three or four years my mum and I have gone to New York together shopping.
“It was while out there that I started noticing all these cupcake shops. They are everywhere and the Americans are crazy about them. I had to try them and I instantly fell in love with fresh cupcakes, they are just so delicious.
“When I got home I picked up some cupcake recipe books from the internet and had a go at baking them myself. I’ve always enjoyed cooking and baking so it was a natural step to start making these cakes I’d loved on holiday.
“I started making them for friends’ birthdays and was surprised by the great reaction. People loved them and friend after friend told me I should start making them commercially. It was really exciting.
“I did some market research and found there was a gap in the market for fresh, naturally made cupcakes in the UK. Despite their huge popularity in the States no one here seemed to be offering them.
“After 17 years in my last job I felt it was time for a change so I decided to go for it and I left Experian at the end of March and launched Bluebell Bakery immediately afterwards.
“It has really taken off quickly and I’m very busy with weddings and corporate events. I have an edible ink printer so can decorate the cakes with logos and even personal photographs.
“It’s something different and people do appreciate being able to buy something bespoke for their party or wedding.
“I’m still working from home at the moment but I will be looking to move into commercial premises as the business develops as my little kitchen won’t be able to take the strain.”

Stamp Duty Rise Good For Market

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Some good news for the beleagured property market today. The Government has raised the threshold for stamp duty to £175,000 which should help some first time buyers get onto the ladder.

The move was welcomed by Nottingham property expert Frank Flegg, Director of investment company Happy Homes Investments Ltd.

Mr Flegg said: “This is very good news and will help the market to turn a corner. By increasing the stamp duty threshold to £175,000 the Government has made many properties, especially those in the more desirable areas of Nottingham, stamp duty exempt and an even better prospect for Buy to Let investors.

“The number of occupiers choosing to rent rather than buy is continuing to increase due to the perception of difficulty in buying. This is helping rental yields stay at their strongest levels in years. Happy Homes are now sourcing properties with yields above 10% for the first time in many years.

“One of the key lenders, Birmingham Midshires dropped their very popular Buy to Let rate by 0.5% over the weekend – a great sign of returning confidence in property from the banks.”
